On 28th January, 2026, the “Go Global 2026: Success in the UK and Beyond” Forum, jointly organised by the British Chamber of Commerce South China and the UK Department for Business and Trade, was successfully held at the Park Hyatt Shenzhen. Under the theme of “Success in the UK and Beyond”, the forum focused on the full-chain challenges and opportunities for Chinese companies expanding globally with high quality. It brought together over a hundred guests from government agencies, chambers of commerce, financial and legal institutions, technology firms, and pioneering globalised companies to explore how to build resilience and achieve sustainable growth in a complex international environment.
The forum commenced with a welcome address by Mr. Mark Clayton, Chair of the British Chamber of Commerce South China. He emphasised the importance of reliable partnerships in global expansion: “Successful global expansion depends on reliable partners.” Mr. Clayton stated that the Chamber is committed to connecting UK and Chinese businesses, offering practical guidance and a trusted network to help companies build long-term credibility and resilience.

Mr. XIE Zhen, Director, Guangdong Board of Investment Promotion, Department of Commerce of Guangdong Province, highlighted the substantial achievements in Guangdong-UK economic and trade cooperation: bilateral trade reached RMB 150 billion last year, and UK investment into Guangdong grew by 85%. He proposed three areas for deepened collaboration: enhancing industrial cooperation to build secure cross-border supply chains; boosting trade facilitation; and fostering e-commerce cooperation to cultivate a new ecosystem for international trade.

Mr. Trevor Lewis, Head of Trade & Investment at the British Consulate-General Guangzhou, noted that going global has evolved from simple exporting to building a global ecosystem, encompassing local supply chains, brand building, cultural adaptation, and talent development. He encouraged companies to fully leverage the expertise and networks of the speakers to prepare thoroughly for new market entry.

A key highlight was the official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Going Global Comprehensive Service Center for Chinese Enterprises and the British Chamber of Commerce South China. The two parties will adopt a “horizontal plus vertical” cooperation model: horizontal modules will address the full life-cycle needs of overseas expansion, while vertical modules will focus on precise industry-specific matching. Together, they aim to build a systematic UK market service framework for Chinese companies, connecting them with reliable and professional UK partners.

Mr. Richard Li, Managing Director, South China, HSBC, shared the pathways and financial solutions for “Chinese Enterprises Expanding into the UK and Going Global under Globalization” from a financial institution’s perspective. He advised companies to carefully evaluate destinations: the UK remains a key market in clean energy, digital tech, advanced manufacturing, and life sciences; meanwhile, ASEAN (young population, growing consumption) and the Middle East (sovereign fund cooperation, industrial localisation) are emerging hotspots. He recommended leveraging Hong Kong as a springboard and emphasised managing rising compliance costs and financial risks like currency fluctuations.

Ms. Chris McComb, Director of Strategic Engagement, Asia Pacific, Law Debenture, shared insights on “Succeeding Globally: Key Considerations and How Hong Kong Can Help”. She stressed: “Governance is not a burden, it’s an investment in success.” UK corporate governance emphasises transparency, accountability, and board independence (separate Chair and CEO roles). Companies need to establish localised and traceable governance structures. She suggested using Hong Kong as a “training ground” for entering the UK, thanks to its common law system and governance culture.

Ms. Sylvia Wu, Partner, Tax and Business Advisory Services, PwC, delivered a deep dive into “From Compliance to Advantage: Transforming Global Tax Uncertainty into Strategic Opportunity”. She noted that 78% of senior executives see tax uncertainty as a major barrier to international growth. She emphasised: “Tax is not a cost, it is a strategy.” Proper holding structures (e.g., via Hong Kong, the UK) can effectively use tax treaties to reduce liability. Companies must also be aware of Permanent Establishment (PE) risks and the Global Minimum Tax (Pillar Two) rules to avoid double taxation or “top-up” taxes. Tax planning needs to be proactive and elevated to a strategic level.

Mr. Amars Mehmi, Chief Growth Officer, Juice, shared practical insights on “How to Succeed in the UK”. He pointed out that 95% of UK consumer purchase decisions are emotionally driven. Brands must build emotional resonance through authentic storytelling, not just product features. Using BYD as an example, he noted that the directly translated slogan “Build Your Dreams” did not work well in the UK market, highlighting the need for brands to adapt their messaging and understand local culture to build deeper connections.

Ms. Zoey Zhang, Public Affairs Director, Honor Device Co., Ltd., shared Honor’s practices on “Open Innovation, Purposeful Action: HONOR & UK Partners Structuring a Global Ecosystem”. Four years after entering the UK, Honor’s local team has grown to over 90 employees, with its smartphone market share consistently ranking among the top. She emphasised that success stems from deep collaboration with local operators, channel partners, and media, proactive engagement with industry regulators, and building a warm brand image through tech-for-good initiatives (e.g., a documentary with the BBC supporting ALS patients), truly integrating into the local community and industrial ecosystem.

In a panel discussion titled “Trust and Resilience: The Path to Sustainable Growth for Chinese Companies Entering the UK Market”, experts from Juice, Law Debenture, Amazon Web Services, and WeRide engaged in a deep dive.
- On Pace and Trust: Ms. Maeve Zhang, Head of Global Marketing & PR at WeRide, advised: “Don’t push the UK market with ‘China speed’; think from their pace and perspective.” Patience is needed when communicating with local regulators and partners, and building trust is key.
- On Technology and Resilience: Mr. Bing Wu, Amazon Web Services Solution Architect Manager, Amazon, stated that resilience equals compliance, operability, and technological architecture. Local servers pose compliance, reliability, and architectural challenges as businesses globalise. He recommended adopting global cloud services from the outset to build a technology foundation that ensures both compliance elasticity and business continuity.
- On Governance and Trust: Mr. Marc Cormack-Bissett, Director Hong Kong & Head of Corporate Secretarial Services for APAC, Law Debenture, emphasised that clear governance structures and transparent ownership are the foundation for conveying trust and gaining recognition from the market and partners. Governance should be seen as a strategic investment.
- On Cooperation Models: Mr. Alan Poole, CEO of Juice, and other panelists agreed that the choice between acquisition, partnership, or building from scratch depends on the company’s stage, resources, and goals. Acquisition provides fast market entry and existing trust; partnership leverages local expertise to reduce risk; building offers strong control and easier standardisation. “Great tech opens the door, but regulatory support and strong partnerships help you scale.” was a consensus reached.
- On Team Building: It was recommended that companies establish local teams early, hiring local employees and even appointing a local General Manager to better integrate into the market and build trust. Avoid setting up offices blindly; test the waters first through partners or consultancies before gradually building a physical presence.
