Jay Ian Birbeck is a writer, designer, and content director based in Guangzhou. He writes about Chinese telecoms and technology for Telecoms.com and Light Reading (Informa TechTarget), mostly covering Huawei, ZTE, and the wider Chinese telecoms industry. He also presents on camera, hosts webinars, and is a regular host of Huawei’s “Win-Win Live” series.
He has worked with BritCham South China for five years. He built and maintains the Chamber’s website and helped produce its inaugural Supply Chain Resilience Report and Go Global Programme Report this year.
He also works with fellow BritCham South China member Kinyu, where he contributes to the company’s website and writes analysis and editorial content on areas including China’s supply chains, HR, and business environment.
He moved to Beijing in 2018 as a reporter for China.org.cn, and he still edits State Council Information Office transcripts into English, covering topics from industrial policy to trade.
Before moving to China, he was a motion graphics designer for ITV’s daytime lineup in London, including “Good Morning Britain” under Piers Morgan.
He holds an MSc in Digital Humanities from UCL. His research with Professor Sacha Stern on digitally reconstructing ancient Hebrew manuscripts was published by Cambridge University Library.
